MORE than 30 children from Minjerribah enjoyed a day of football, fun and friendship when Redlands United FC hosted its inaugural free Community Football Camp on North Stradbroke Island.
Held at the Straddie Sharks Allsports Club, the camp welcomed about 35 children aged between four and 11, with youngsters from a range of backgrounds – including First Nations children – taking part in the inclusive initiative.
The free camp was designed to remove barriers to participation and give every child the opportunity to enjoy football, regardless of their experience or ability.
Throughout the day, children took part in coaching activities, games and skill sessions aimed at building confidence, encouraging teamwork and creating new friendships in a welcoming environment.
Redlands United said the event was about far more than football, with the club hoping to strengthen community connections while introducing more young people to the game.
The club thanked the Minjerribah Moorgumpin Elders in Council for its guidance and partnership throughout the planning and delivery of the camp, with special recognition given to Taryn Ruska-Fisher for helping bring the initiative to life.
Support also came from Redland City Council, with Brett Nutley assisting in securing the venue and providing food and refreshments for participants after the camp.
Major sponsor Xburo backed the event, while SeaLink South East Queensland helped transport Redlands United coaches, volunteers and equipment to the island.
The club also acknowledged its coaches and volunteers for donating their time and expertise to ensure the day was a success.
Redlands United said it hoped the camp would be the first of many community initiatives on Minjerribah with football continuing to provide opportunities to bring people together, build friendships and strengthen community ties.
