REDLANDS Tigers have continued their strong start to the Queensland Premier Grade Two Day Competition with another impressive performance against Sandgate Redcliffe, posting 9 for 345 declared before rain and storms brought an early end to play on day two.
The round also marked a special milestone for Will Barwick, who made his First Grade debut as Redlands cap number 701.
Barwick was presented his cap by life member Trent Conwell, who was his first captain in grade cricket after Barwick relocated from Rockhampton two years ago.
It was a proud moment for both Barwick and the club, made even more memorable by having his family present to share in the occasion.
After a successful round one victory, Redlands carried their momentum with a dominant batting display.
Captain Liam Smith led from the front with a superb 152 not out, anchoring the innings with patience and composure from start to finish, batting the entire innings.
His partnership with Sam Heazlett, who blasted a brilliant 145 from 137 balls including 14 fours and six sixes, proved the difference as the pair combined for more than 200 runs to put Redlands in control.
Leigh Drennan added a valuable 36 in the middle order, supporting his captain and helping push the total beyond 300 before Redlands declared late on the opening day at 9 for 345 from 89 overs.
Sandgate Redcliffe’s bowlers toiled hard, with Christopher Abbey finishing with 4 for 72 from 23 overs, while Josh Creevey claimed 3 for 49.
In reply, Sandgate Redcliffe reached 1 for 94 from 34 overs before storms swept across Brisbane on Saturday, bringing an early close to proceedings and preventing any further play.
Daniel Fielding remained unbeaten on 45 alongside Steven Hogan on 40, as the match concluded without a result.
Reflecting on his debut, Barwick said it was a moment he would never forget.
“It was an unreal feeling to debut for Redlands and to have my family there made it even more special,” Barwick said.
