RCMC Multisport athletes delivered another standout performance at the Raby Bay Triathlon on Sunday, February 1, producing a day defined by fierce rivalry, late drama and podium success in challenging conditions.
The feature contest came in the Mixed Team category, where a friendly but intense duel between RCMC and the Sharks played out across the course.
RCMC’s team of Kate Gayner, Chris Hill and Dylan Phuah were locked in a tight battle all morning, with little separating the two clubs through the swim and bike legs.
After the bike, the Sharks held a narrow advantage, leaving the pressure squarely on Phuah in the final run.
In true form, Phuah rose to the moment, reeling in the Sharks runner on the final lap before surging clear to claim a thrilling victory and bring home gold for RCMC.
The Sharks were forced to settle for second, while the RCMC family team, led by Anthony Della, rounded out the podium in third.
Strong individual performances underlined RCMC’s depth on a brutally hot morning that took a heavy toll on the run leg.
Matt Brace claimed a superb win, while Michael Pelka and Bronnie Williams both secured second-place finishes.
Christine Sands continued her impressive form, finishing third and notching up another personal best.
There were also strong efforts throughout the field from Russell Hunter, Lucan O’Brien, Franco CN and Jack Baxter, with Baxter’s sharp run split standing out late in the race as temperatures climbed.
The day captured everything that defines triathlon, from the colour and energy of the start to the grit and determination on the finishing straight, with athletes pushing through the heat and feeding off the atmosphere from start to finish.
RCMC success extended beyond Raby Bay later in the day, with multisport aquabike specialist Neil Makepiece competing in the Moreton Bay Swim, hosted by SSG Multisport.
Makepiece delivered an excellent performance to finish fourth overall, rounding out a highly successful weekend for the club.
