For those considering a meaningful and stable career, aged care offers both opportunity and purpose.

TRAINING PATHWAYS

In Queensland, entry into aged care typically begins with a Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing or Disability).

This nationally recognised qualification is offered by TAFEs and registered training organisations (RTOs) across the state, including online and blended learning options.

The course covers key areas such as personal care, infection control, communication, and supporting people with dementia.

Many training programs include mandatory work placements, giving students hands-on experience in real aged care settings. For those looking to progress further, a Certificate IV in Ageing Support or Diploma of Community Services can open doors to supervisory or specialised roles.

Queensland’s Skilling Queenslanders for Work initiative and Fee-Free TAFE programs may offer subsidised or fully funded training for eligible students, making this career pathway more accessible than ever.

WHO MAKES A GOOD AGED CARE WORKER?

Formal qualifications are essential, but it’s personal qualities that make someone truly effective in aged care.

Successful carers are compassionate, patient and reliable, with a desire to improve others’ quality of life.

Good communication skills are vital, especially when supporting people with hearing loss, cognitive challenges or cultural differences. Aged care also requires emotional resilience, as the job can involve loss and grief.

Aged care workers must also be attentive to detail, particularly when managing medications or identifying health changes. Physical stamina is often needed for tasks like lifting.

Importantly, the ability to treat people with dignity and respect – seeing the person, not just the patient – is what truly defines excellence in this field.

Aged care can be a deeply rewarding profession for the right person. Whether you’re starting out, re-entering the workforce or changing careers, now is a great time to explore the training and support available to join Queensland’s vital care workforce.
