Council will introduce new parking restrictions at the Moores Road car park in Redland Bay as part of ongoing efforts to improve access and parking availability at the busy Weinam Creek precinct.
The changes are aimed at increasing parking turnover for commuters travelling to and from the Southern Moreton Bay Islands while the long-awaited multi-level car park for the area remains under development.
Acting Mayor Julie Talty said the Moores Road car park formed part of a staged program of improvements designed to better support commuters and visitors using the Weinam Creek precinct.
“We know parking at Weinam Creek is under pressure, particularly during peak commuter times,” Cr Talty said.
“These changes at the Moores Road car park are about improving turnover and availability, making it easier for people to find a parking space to access the ferry terminal.”
Under the changes, 384 unrestricted parking spaces will be converted into 297 seven-day (168-hour) parking spaces and 87 three-day (72-hour) parking spaces.
In addition, 38 existing three-day vehicle-and-boat-trailer spaces will become 24-hour parking bays.
Cr Talty said the temporary measures would help improve parking access while Council worked with the Queensland Government’s Economic Development Queensland (EDQ) on a permanent solution.
“EDQ will fund and deliver the new multi-level car park at Weinam Creek,” she said.
“In the meantime, we’re taking practical steps that can be delivered sooner – starting at Moores Road – to improve how existing parking is used.”
Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls said the changes would create a fairer system for people relying on the ferry services.
“This is another step in the ongoing evolution of Weinam Creek and will support greater parking availability for those using the nearby ferry services,” Cr Rendalls said.
Council is encouraging motorists who leave vehicles parked for extended periods at Weinam Creek to check updated signage before the changes take effect.
Information, including parking maps and the commencement date of the new restrictions, will be available on Council’s website.
The Moores Road car park was delivered by Redland City Council in partnership with Redland Investment Corporation as part of stage one of the Weinam Creek Priority Development Area project, adding more than 500 parking spaces for Southern Moreton Bay Islands commuters.
