Firstly, can I say it is with some conflict I even think about this column knowing of the terrible weather conditions and hardships many have faced during recent times in Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Puts everything in perspective doesn’t it. The NRL, and all sport for that matter, seem to have a grip on many of us that sometimes goes beyond reality.

Those poor souls whose lives have been dealt a terribly unfair blow need just anything to go their way for a change.

But last weekend’s Round 1 of the NRL will have a few of the coaches scratching their heads and wondering whether or not they pulled the right selection strings, among quite a few other problems.

I have heard it said by some already that there is not enough talent available and, in their opinion, it was highlighted during last weekend’s games. I couldn’t disagree more!

It sometimes takes courage to pick a youngster with little to no experience, but as a coach, if you have got the systems in place you believe in, you should be able to identify and pick new talent.

I doubt many coaches trying to secure a new contract would have complained they didn’thave enough good players coming through.

In fact, quite the opposite, most would have been trying to convince their employers they could turn Jane into Tarzan.

But one thing for sure, anyone watching Manly’s annihilation of the Cowboys on Saturday night couldn’t help but be impressed by the depth of match-winning talent Anthony Seibold has at his disposal –what a performance that was!

I thought equally impressive was the Broncos’ flogging of the Roosters, and the ruthless display by the Raiders against the Warriors.

And when you consider the 56 points the Storm put on against the Eels, we know we are in for a great 2025 NRL season.

I hope your team is already showing the winning formula – every two points at this time of the year is crucial.
