CONSTRUCTION of a new Youth and Community Centre on Macleay Island is set to begin this year, marking a significant milestone for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands community.
Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell shared the latest developments, including a $1 million boost in external funding for the centre’s construction, and insights into recent community feedback.
“The new centre aims to increase recreational, education, health and social opportunities for residents living on the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” Mayor Mitchell said.
“The draft concept design proposes both a youth focus as well as a meeting and activity space for all.”
The centre, set to be built at 32-40 Central Rd behind the Macleay Island Community Hall, is expected to begin construction late this year.
Cr Mitchell emphasised the significance of the project, noting the clear need for a facility like this in the community.
“There is also a need for multipurpose spaces with meeting and counselling rooms available for mainland service outreach to support residents,” she said.
Division 5 Councillor Shane Rendalls added his perspective, highlighting the broader benefits for all the Southern Moreton Bay Islands.
“There is high demand for accommodation and meeting spaces across all of the Southern Moreton Bay Islands,” Cr Rendalls said.
“The new facility on Macleay will improve access to highly needed community services not only for Macleay Island, but for all of SMBI.”
The centre, funded by the Queensland Government’s South East Queensland Community Stimulus Program in partnership with Redland City Council, promises to be a vital resource for locals.
Last September, the Council sought input from the local community on the services, programs, and activities they would like to see at the new centre.
Cr Rendalls revealed that feedback showed strong support for a vibrant space offering opportunities for education and training.
“Council officers have subsequently been liaising with training providers regarding building and kitchen design for provision of courses such as general education, hospitality, and bakery,” he said.
“Council and I will be having be ongoing consultation with the local community and community groups to discuss how service use will be configured.”
State Minister for Local Government and Water Ann Leahy highlighted the importance of such community hubs.
“Facilities like these provide a great place for locals to meet and run events, which strengthens community bonds,” she said.
“The Crisafulli Government is delighted to help support Redland City Council deliver this new centre for the residents of Macleay Island and surrounds.”
The centre is set to become a hub for the community.
