MINJERRIBAH Camping has announced the full re-opening of 322 campsites across the island, which were significantly damaged by Tropical Cyclone Alfred earlier this year.

The announcement comes as the Quandamooka Yoolooburrabee Aboriginal Corporation (QYAC) reports a strong $6 million profit for the 2024-25 financial year, with Minjerribah Camping continuing to serve as its main commercial arm and a major contributor to the organisation’s tourism growth.

The business has undergone extensive operational review and investment in recent months, including capital works upgrades to ageing infrastructure, and planning for improved visitor amenities such as the newly funded Adams Beach facilities.

Minjerribah Camping Board member and QYAC Chair Cameron Costello said the campsites at Main and Flinders Beaches would be open from last Saturday following a comprehensive program of repairs and safety assessments.

“The wild cyclonic weather, which was then followed by heavy rain, caused a lot of damage on the island – causing dangerous erosion all along the sand dunes, nearby tracks and walkways,” Mr Costello said. “The whole area was deemed a safety risk, which is why we temporarily closed the campsites and started a comprehensive restoration program to ensure they were safe and fully operational.

“After a considerable amount of heavy machinery works involving Minjerribah Camping and QYAC crews and the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS), we are pleased to report that all 322 campsites have been fully assessed and deemed safe for the return of campers, just in time for the Christmas holiday break.

“We would like to thank QPWS and QYAC for their assistance and advice during this period and we look to welcoming back visitors to Minjerribah Camping.”

The restoration program, which has been described as one of the most significant undertaken since Minjerribah Camping became QYAC-controlled, also aligns with broader organisational reforms.

QYAC has emphasised improved financial planning, streamlined operations, and strengthened reporting across both QYAC and Minjerribah Camping.
