A NEW special school proposed beside Manly West State School could open in 2029, easing enrolment pressure at Darling Point Special School.
Early consultation has begun on the Wynnum-Manly project, with residents invited to have their say on the proposed campus by Wednesday, October 21.
The school would be built in stages over several years and include three two-storey learning centres with 22 classrooms, a two-storey administration and resource building, and a multi-purpose hall with music facilities.
Plans also include short-term parking and a student drop-off and pick-up zone, bus and car parking, a sports field and amenities, outdoor sports court and play spaces.
State Education Minister John-Paul Langbroek said the school was part of a statewide push to meet rapidly growing demand for specialist education.
“Demand for special schools has grown considerably with enrolments increasing 47 per cent since 2019,” he said.
“This new special school for Wynnum-Manly will help meet that demand and relieve enrolment pressure in the area.
“We want to hear what local neighbours think about the plan for the new special school.”
The State Government has committed more than $860 million to build nine new special schools across Queensland as part of its broader 22-school construction program.
Before a final decision is made, the State Government says it will investigate potential traffic, vegetation, noise and stormwater impacts and possible mitigation measures.
Those findings will inform the detailed design with a second round of consultation to outline further details, including the final height and appearance of the buildings, before the project proceeds.
Mr Langbroek said the early consultation period would give neighbours and key stakeholders a chance to influence planning decisions.
