Pictures can say a thousand words

My husband has discovered emojis.

Truth be told, he probably discovered them years ago, but he has now taken to using them on random occasions.

When he does, it’s like he is making up for lost time.

Where one logically placed emoji will do, he uses many. He sort of hedges his bets in emoji world, sending off little waving hands and smiles and handshakes, just in case you didn’t get the message the first time.

I see it as saying the same word many times, when just one would do. If nothing else, it is friendly, perhaps excessively so, and occasionally makes me laugh.

This proliferation would be especially cute coming from a child, but given his advancing years, I am not sure that cute really cuts it anymore. I can’t of course discount the analogies here between a child and my husband.

It is a well-known fact that babies and older people have several similarities, most particularly when it comes to what goes in and what comes out of their bodies.

But let’s not go there. Let’s hope that never becomes fodder for a future column.

But I do often tell my friends to think of my husband as if he is five, as a way of explaining his behaviour at times.

I mean five-year-olds don’t mind a bit of attention and regularly act silly. We can now add to this, the latest emoji issue, something shared by a plethora of young or at least considerably younger people.

Anyone who knows my husband would be nodding their heads (and possibly seeking nodding head emojis) right now.

My sister also doesn’t mind the odd emoji in her communication as well, something some family members occasionally comment on.

Apparently in emoji land, you have to look behind the cute pictures for the darker meaning. The pictures say more than the pictures seem to say on the surface.

And that’s where she apparently falls down. I am told her use of said emojis is regularly incorrect and could be misconstrued.

I can’t really comment as clearly I am a novice when it comes to little cute pictures. I am happy to simply look at the pictures and appreciate the fact that someone bothered to send me a message.

Not that I would know, given that I feel quite accomplished if I ever find the thumbs up signal.
