When we talk about hearing tests, it’s important to understand that they vary in length and purpose.

A hearing test can range from a brief 15-minute screening to a more common one-hour diagnostic assessment.

Many people start with a free 15-minute hearing check. While it can be a good introduction, it can set the wrong tone (pun intended).

At best, screening serves as the first step in a process of understanding, guiding individuals toward a full diagnostic process with a more rigorous clinic, should they need it.

The question is, what do you want from your hearing test? Is it a simple screening to raise flags for potential issues, or do you want to find an audiologist you can trust to solve your problem? Understanding this will help guide you in making informed decisions about the type of clinic and the type of appointment you want.

Medicare offers rebates under codes 82315 and 82324, totalling $53.60, but to be eligible, you must have a doctor’s referral for the test. While helpful, this rebate won’t cover the cost of a session, so expect to pay a portion out of pocket if you are seeking a comprehensive assessment and consultation.

Pensioners are eligible for the Government’s Hearing Services Program (HSP). Unlike Medicare, which allows ongoing claims, the HSP funds a hearing assessment once every five years, with shorter annual checks in between.

Once that entitlement has been claimed, no further funding is available until the anniversary of the last test.

Free online hearing tests are convenient, especially for a quick check at home, but they lack the reliability of an in-clinic test.

The calibration of your headphones and the surrounding environment can significantly impact the accuracy of these tests. Nonetheless, they provide an accessible starting point and should not be dismissed entirely.

For those who don’t qualify for the HSP, getting a referral and seeking out reputable clinics remains the best course of action. Ultimately, it’s crucial to weigh the quality and depth of care provided. When it comes to your health value for money should always be the priority.
