Barra closure in the Gulf

Just a reminder that the closed season for barramundi in the Gulf of Carpentaria is currently in place until midnight on January 31.

During this time, it’s also prohibited to deliberately target barramundi for catch and release, as the stress of capture may prevent a fish from spawning.

However, the closure doesn’t apply to exempted stocked waters in the Gulf, which include East Leichardt Dam, Belmore, Corella, Julius, Fred Tritton and Moondarra lakes, and the waterways upstream of these impoundments.

So grab yourself a stocked impoundment permit if you want to keep chasing this species in those waterways

New species added to Qld Fishing 2.0 app

In response to feedback from recreational fishers, we’ve added 36 new species to the Qld Fishing 2.0 app.

This update features several highly anticipated pelagic species, including marlin and swordfish.

Plus, we’ve updated and added missing images for 22 other species already in the app, making identification even easier. Our total now stands at almost 500 species!

If you notice any of your favourite species missing, email qldrecfishingapp.support@daf.qld.gov.au.

Haven’t downloaded the FREE app yet? Hop to it! We’ve also created a bunch of how-to videos on our YouTube channel.

Tropical rock lobster closure

A closed season currently applies to all species of tropical rock lobster in particular northern waters until midnight on December 31.

The closure applies to the Gulf of Carpentaria and Queensland east coast north of latitude 14°S.
For details, please download the Qld Fishing 2.0 app.
