It is a well-known fact, backed by research, that quality friendships are positively correlated with wellbeing.

Regular and good companionship plays an important part in reducing the negative impacts of feelings of loneliness and isolation.

Research shows older Australians are more likely to experience social isolation and loneliness than any other demographic.

A new program by Redlands local community organisation – STAR Friends – aims to make it easier for the elderly to enjoy the benefits of friendship.

STAR Friends is a free service by STAR Community Services providing quality social connections for seniors on a Home Care Package or on the national waitlist for a Home Care Package.

“If you or someone you know would enjoy seeing a friendly visitor once a fortnight who will come to your home and spend quality time with you, please reach out to STAR. We are here to help,” STAR Community Services chief executive Patsy Wilshire said.

Your STAR Friend will be matched with you based on your interests and hobbies. You can choose to simply enjoy a cuppa and chat, or:

  • go for a walk or an outing in the community;
  • play games together such as chess, cards;
  • do arts and crafts;
  • rekindle hobbies;
  • play or listen to music, connect with your friends and family, using technology, and more.

This is a free service funded by the Australian Government Department of Health under the Aged Care Community Visitors Scheme (ACCVS).

If you are a home care package client or are on the waitlist, and would like to know more about STAR Friends, please call Jessy Byrnes at STAR on 3821 6699 or email [email protected].
