MORE than 1300 early childhood educators across Bonner are set to receive a long-awaited pay boost after new legislation passed Parliament.

For the Redlands and Bayside community, where early learning centres are woven into the daily rhythm of family life, the change marks a significant shift for a workforce that has long been described as essential but undervalued.

Across Bonner, 77 early childhood education and care services will benefit from the funding.

That includes the small suburban centres tucked into local streets, the larger long day care facilities near shopping precincts, and the kindergartens that have supported generations of Redlands families.

For parents, the announcement lands at a time when childcare costs and staff shortages have been frequent topics of conversation at school gates and weekend sport.

Federal Member for Bonner Kara Cook said the legislation acknowledged the importance of the sector and locked in a 15 per cent pay rise for educators.

For a full-time educator, that equates to roughly $255 extra each week, while early childhood teachers will see around $410 a week more.

The funding is tied to limits on fee increases, meaning families aren’t expected to shoulder the cost, a detail Ms Cook says is central to keeping childcare accessible.

Local educators say the pay rise is more than a financial adjustment – it’s recognition.

Many have spoken about the emotional labour of the job, supporting children through their first friendships, first challenges, and first steps into learning, while juggling high workloads and staffing pressures.

Nationally, the sector has already seen improvement, with around 20,000 additional educators employed since the pay rise was announced and vacancies dropping by more than 31 per cent.

The legislation also strengthens safety requirements with services needing to meet national standards to receive funding.

From July 2027, centres that fall short may face reductions or suspensions.
