REDLANDS teenager Dieter Buhner has earned the honour of representing Australia at the WDF Asia Pacific Cup Youth Championships in Mongolia this October, marking a major milestone in the rising darts player’s rapidly growing career.
At just 16, Buhner has already made a strong impression on the local darts scene, recently sweeping all three events at the Redlands Closed Dart Championships.
But his journey began far more simply, throwing darts in the family garage at age 14.
“I started just playing with family, and from there I kept practising more and more,” he said.
“I began entering competitions, then applying for my state, and now for my country.”
Buhner says he draws inspiration not from darts players, but from elite athletes known for their mental toughness.
“People like Michael Schumacher and Novak Djokovic,” he said.
“Their mentality to win, but also to be the best you can be with attitude, switching from a negative point of view to a positive straight away.”
When he received the call confirming his selection for the Australian youth team, Buhner said the moment was one of pure relief.
“It was between myself and another person … luckily, I got picked,” he said.
“It was a big relief after all the hard work.”
He credits the Redlands Darts Club for shaping his development, describing it as a supportive environment that has backed him every step of the way.
“It’s been really good having a safe environment full of friendly people willing to help you out,” he said.
“Whether that be coaching, spending time with you, or funding, they’ve always been there.”
Representing Australia comes with significant travel and tournament costs, and the local community is now rallying behind Buhner’s journey.
His family has launched a GoFundMe to help cover expenses, with any contribution welcomed.
For Buhner, wearing the green and gold carries deep meaning.
“It shows you’ve committed your time to the sport and that you’ve succeeded,” he said.
His family describes the achievement as “a dream come true” and the Redlands community is right behind him as he prepares to take on the world stage.
