CONRAD Sewell has already lived the kind of music career most artists spend a lifetime chasing, but the Brisbane-born singer is far from ready to live off the memories as he spoke with Redland Bayside News before playing Cleveland Sands Hotel on October 23.
There have been number ones, platinum records, an ARIA and international stages, while his unmistakable vocals on Kygo’s Firestone introduced his voice to millions around the world.
“I have to remind myself that I’ve ticked things off the bucket list like that and that it’s been an amazing journey,” said 38-year-old Sewell. “But there’s just so much more that I want and so much more that I feel like I haven’t got yet.
“I feel like there’s another level or this next chapter that will open up an international audience for me again.”
That next chapter is already taking shape as Sewell has finished a new 10-track album, returned to some of the collaborators behind his biggest music and made perhaps the boldest move of his career.
“I’ve started my own label, so it’s going to come out under my label instead of under one of the majors, which I’ve always been with,” he said.
Before the next era arrives, Sewell is returning closer to where it all began, in the Cleveland gig which he describes as the most stripped-back tour he has ever done.
“That’s where I feel really comfortable and it’s quite easy on my voice because I’m not singing over the top of a band,” he said. “I can really just focus on my vocals and I love it.
And what is the most ‘Conrad Sewell’ Conrad Sewell song?
“I’d say Healing Hands, to be honest. We end our sets with that song and there’s something gospel about it. It’s like the closest thing you’ll come to church at the end of the show.”
