CUP football returned to Redlands City on Easter Thursday with a fiery local derby, as Capalaba stunned Redlands United 3-2 in a gripping Round 4 clash of the Kappa Queensland Cup at John Fredericks Park.
In a match packed with drama, momentum swings and desperate defending, it was the Bulldogs who emerged victorious, overturning a half-time deficit through sheer grit and determination.
Redlands looked in control for long periods and led 2-1 at the break thanks to a clinical brace from Michael Bradley.
But despite creating a host of chances, the Red Devils were ultimately undone by Capalaba’s relentless defensive resolve and late attacking surge.
The visitors started brightly and dominated the opening 20 minutes, peppering the Capalaba goal with efforts.
However, the Bulldogs held firm, throwing bodies on the line to deny chance after chance before working their way into the contest.
Their resistance paid off in the 36th minute when Matt Gordon reacted quickest to a rebound, slotting home to give Capalaba the lead.
Redlands responded almost immediately.
Bradley rose to meet a pinpoint cross from Freddie Cruise, powering home a diving header to level the scores before striking again just before half-time, finishing off a slick team move to hand the Red Devils a deserved 2-1 advantage at the break.
But the second half told a different story.
Capalaba returned with renewed energy, lifting their intensity and turning the contest into a battle of desperation before grabbing a deserved equaliser.
While Redlands continued to create opportunities, they were repeatedly denied by a wall of navy shirts, with Bulldogs defenders producing a string of crucial blocks in and around the box.
Wave after wave of Redlands attacks were repelled, with frustration building as the hosts refused to yield.
With nine minutes remaining, Capalaba struck the decisive blow – once again reacting first to a loose ball following a save to snatch the 3-2 lead.
The final stages were frenetic.
Redlands threw everything forward in search of an equaliser, dominating possession and launching continuous attacks deep into stoppage time.
But Capalaba’s defence stood tall.
Despite the loss, Bradley was named Redlands United’s “Sea Fuel Cleveland” Man of the Match for his standout attacking display and two goals.
Post-match, a disappointed Redlands head coach Graham Fyfe said his side had done enough to win.
“So, performance-wise and chances-wise we should have won the game, but Capalaba, to be fair to them, really fought hard,” he said.
“Overall, happy with the performance, but gutted with the result because on another day, we’ll probably beat them on today’s performance.
The two sides meet again next Friday night in another local derby, with Round 7 of the FQPL1 set to return to John Fredericks Park.
Kick-off is at 8.30pm, with the Under 23s starting at 6.30pm.
