OCTOBER is Probus Month across Australia, aligning with Queensland’s Seniors Month and the International Day of Older Persons at the start of October.

For Capalaba Probus Club, it’s a chance to highlight the value of social connection for retirees and the role local clubs play in keeping older residents active, engaged and connected.

Probus South Pacific CEO Silvana Martignago said the national celebration reflects the organisation’s long standing focus on friendship and belonging.

“For 50 years, Probus has been bringing people together and creating opportunities for friendship, connection and new experiences,” she said.

“We know how important social connection is as we get older.”

The Capalaba club kicked off its celebrations with an information stall at Capalaba Park Shopping Centre followed by a relaxed barbecue in nearby parkland.

Members say the month is less about formal events and more about reinforcing the club’s motto – Fun, Fellowship and Friendship – through simple and social activities that help people stay connected in retirement.

Queensland’s Seniors Month theme, Connect and Celebrate, echoes that sentiment and the Council on the Ageing Queensland that strong communities rely on social connectedness, particularly for older residents who may face isolation or reduced opportunities to participate.

Local Probus clubs have long embraced that mission.

Capalaba Probus offers walking groups, craft sessions, theatre outings, coffee catch ups and member led excursions, all designed to keep minds active and friendships flourishing.

“Probus gives retirees and semi retirees a welcoming way to meet new people, pursue their interests, enjoy activities and outings, and continue making the most of life,” Ms Martignago said.

With Probus Month running all October, Capalaba members hope their activities encourage newcomers to see what the club offers.

Residents can find nearby clubs at probussouthpacific.org/probus-clubs-brisbane or contact Capalaba Probus on 0492 263 675.
