CONCERN for public safety has resulted in the removal of the Dan Street Boardwalk in Capalaba after 24 years of service to the community.
Capalaba local and wildlife photographer Ngareta Cassidy said she was in the area on Monday and decided to walk the trail when she noticed the signage marking the site for demolition.
“I was able to walk the length of it recently, and there was some damage at one end, especially where a beam had come down and there was damage to the viewing platform and a couple of ‘spongy’ places,” she said.
Ms Cassidy said she enquired with local councillors about the decision to demolish the site, the possibility to renovate it, and to ask if any community consultation was conducted in the lead-up to the closure.
As a nature photographer, Ms Cassidy said it was important to take care of the small oasis of green space among a developed area.
Redland City Council was contacted for comment, and it was confirmed that the demolition was scheduled for May 28, depending on weather conditions.
Redland City Council general manager infrastructure and operations Nicole Davis said the boardwalk was 24 years old and was closed to the public in December 2023 when a section of the structure had failed.
“An inspection by Council officers confirmed the entire structure had reached the end of its useful life and no longer met Council’s safety standards due to its age and its deterioration,” she said.
“We took into account the availability of alternate pedestrian and cycleways on either site of the boardwalk and value for money based on an alternative throughfare.
Ms Cassidy said she hoped Council would consider conducting community consultation for similar situations for other spaces around the Redlands.
