Mayor slams council over rejected Heinemann Road audit

REDLAND City Mayor Jos Mitchell has criticised her fellow councillors after a mayoral minute calling for an internal audit of the $100 million Heinemann Road Regional Sport and Recreation Precinct was voted down.

“I don’t know what the problem with transparency is,” Mayor Mitchell said after the council meeting on Wednesday.

The mayoral minute, which was hotly contested as all of Mayor Mitchell’s proposals often are, sought an expert review of the long-delayed regional sporting complex.

“This is a project that has been going for more than eight years with a complex still not delivered. The land was bought back in 2017,” she said.

Mayor Mitchell said the audit was intended as a positive process, to examine the project’s feasibility, management, and to make recommendations for the future.

“I called for an internal audit so that some expert eyes could have a look at the project — look at its feasibility, look at how it’s being managed, and make recommendations for the future, a positive process,” she said.

“However, the majority of councillors did not support having an audit on this project.”

Despite the mayor’s calls, the majority of councillors rejected the motion.

Mayor Mitchell said she would make the voting record public.
