Who really benefits from your hearing test?

By Penelope Woods, MAudSt, MAudA (CCP), BMus, a Masters-qualified independent audiologist and hearing health advocate serving the Redlands Community.

When I tell people I’m an audiologist, I occasionally get a knowing look – usually from someone who’s had a hearing test that ended in a high-pressure sales pitch.

It’s a frustrating reality that many hearing clinics in Australia operate under sales targets, with financial incentives for high performance.

The person testing your hearing may be rewarded based on how many hearing aids they “fit” that month.

In those environments, appointments can feel rushed, and the device recommendation may have more to do with “hitting target” than achieving your hearing goals, within your budget.

It may not be obvious, but you may feel instinctively that something is off.

After completing my Master’s degree at the University of Queensland, I was shocked at how common this was. Like most in my field, I became an audiologist to help people – not to push products.

Yet in the large manufacturer-owned retail chains where many of my colleagues and I started our careers; performance is often measured in units sold.

The more expensive the hearing aid, the better. What gets lost is the human story – what matters most to the person seeking help.

If you’ve ever left a hearing test feeling uncertain – unsure who to trust, what your results meant, or whether the recommendation was really for you – you’re not alone. But you do have a choice.

When you’re thinking about your hearing future, ask yourself: Where do I want to be?

Who’s best equipped to help me get there? And whose advice can I truly trust?

Real change starts when your goals, not someone else’s bottom line, guide the process.

Independent audiologists have the freedom to do what’s right: to listen fully, assess thoroughly, and recommend only what serves you best.

That means better outcomes, clearer communication, and greater confidence in every decision you make.

Because hearing well isn’t just about devices – it’s about living well, connecting fully, and being supported by someone who is on your side.

Choose care that’s guided by professional integrity, not sales targets.
