THE Manly Lota RSL Sub-Branch has received top honours for membership growth, earning the sole award presented at the 103rd South Eastern District Conference.
Kerry Gallagher, former CEO of the Australian Medical Association and now President of the RSL’s South Eastern Queensland District, oversees 43 RSL sub-branches.
He awarded the Membership Award to Manly Lota RSL, recognising it as the sub-branch with the highest membership growth in the past year.
The award was presented by Mr Gallagher to Manly Lota RSL President Harry Pregnell at the RSL South Eastern District Conference.
Mr Pregnell dedicated the award to Immediate Past President Michael Muir.
He also highlighted the Sub-Branch’s growing community involvement, with local groups – from indoor bowls to dance classes and theatre – using the hall regularly.
Citing strong community ties, he noted the turnout for the most recent Anzac Day Dawn Service.
“Despite a cold night and teeming rain, over a thousand people turned up for the ceremony, and many came to our RSL Hall afterwards for the traditional ‘Gunfire Breakfast’, prepared and served by a team of local Rotary volunteers,” he said.
“That’s real community spirit. Our aim is to make everyone who walks through the door of this place feel welcome.
“This award demonstrated the value of making friendship and support the first priority of any team like ours.”
