FIRST came the wind, then came the rain. Ex Tropical Cyclone Alfred unleashed its full fury, causing significant damage to the Redlands and the Bayside region after bringiang powerful winds, torrential rain, and widespread flooding.
As the remnants of the cyclone made landfall on Saturday, the region was battered by gusts up to 100 km/h and up to 500mm of intense rainfall over the weekend.
Local emergency services were stretched to their limits, responding to reports of fallen trees, power outages, and structural damage.
More than 40,000 homes lost power in Redland City, with more than 8,000 still without power on Tuesday.
Redland City Council crews have responded to 300 fallen trees impacting power lines.
Working in close coordination with Energex and ADF teams, these crews have worked methodically to remove trees entangled in power infrastructure, clearing hazardous sites and allowing for critical repairs.
This joint effort has already restored power to thousands of homes, with teams continuing to focus on high-priority areas to reconnect more residents.
The collaboration between Council, Energex, and the ADF has proven essential in overcoming access challenges and expediting the recovery process.
Officials cautioned residents to remain vigilant, particularly in areas where floodwaters had receded.
The aftermath of Cyclone Alfred revealed the resilience of Redland City and Bayside residents, who banded together to support each other. Offers of help to share “power and showers” were widespread.
The community’s efforts to assist in the cleanup and recovery have been vital.
