IT’S ALWAYS nice to know you are here with us every fortnight and to receive your emails and feedback in clinic.

During the holiday season, we understand that social gatherings, while joyful, can present unique challenges for people with hearing loss. So, here’s some practical tips to help you enjoy every conversation, connection, and celebration.

Navigating conversations at noisy events can be tricky, but there are ways to reduce frustration and enjoy the moment. Start by positioning yourself strategically – find quieter areas away from loud music or bustling crowds. If the location allows, sitting in well-lit spaces makes it easier to read lips and facial expressions. When possible, try to arrive early. Settling in before the others arrive gives you time to pick the best seat, adjust your hearing aids if necessary, and ease into conversations without feeling rushed.

It’s also important to manage your expectations. You don’t need to catch every word or engage with everyone. Focus on meaningful interactions. If you find yourself struggling to keep up, don’t hesitate to ask the person you’re speaking with to move to a quieter corner. Most people find hearing in noise difficult.

They’re possibly having more trouble than you think and appreciate the suggestion.

Listening fatigue is real, especially at social events where following multiple conversations takes extra effort. Give yourself permission to take breaks when needed. Find a quiet spot to rest and recharge before deciding if you want to dive back in. These little pauses can help you feel refreshed and ready to reconnect with others, rather than overwhelmed or defeated.

At A Better Ear, we understand how effective hearing care enhances communication, boosts mood, reduces fatigue, and helps prevent social isolation. Our patient-centred approach is grounded in empathy and best-practice care, helping people reconnect with the moments that matter.

As you enjoy time with loved ones over the holidays, know that it’s okay to pace yourself and embrace conversations at your own comfort.

If you’d like extra support, we’re here to help.
