THE Redlands Radio Sailing Club has celebrated a significant milestone with the launch of a newly acquired boat and trailer.

The club, which sails radio-controlled yachts most weekends, received a grant from the Redland City Council’s Mayor and Councillor’s Community Benefit Fund, allowing the purchase.

On Saturday, Division 1 Councillor Wendy Boglary joined the Redlands Radio Sailing Club to officially christen their new boat in true nautical style – with a splash of bubbly.

“Any group that brings people together in an inclusive friendly environment where they have a common interest strengthens our community,” Cr Boglary said.

“When I see groups building community from the grassroots up, I know we are doing the right thing.”

The new boat and trailer not only streamline transportation and storage of essential race equipment but also significantly enhance safety for club members.

Club president Stephen Elkington noted that the improved vessel replaced a single-person kayak, which was previously used but lacked the stability and suitability needed for club activities.

“Balancing a boat close to a metre long on your lap while still needing the paddle was not for the faint-hearted,” Mr Elkington said.

He said the new equipment would provide lasting benefits for the club members for many years to come.

“I cannot thank the Redlands City Council enough in making these grants available to small clubs such as Redlands Radio Sailing Club,” he said.

“With only a small number of members and limited funds, purchases such as the new boat and trailer would not have been possible.”

Founded four years ago, the Redlands Radio Sailing Club has grown to over 40 members and is now recognised across South East Queensland as an inclusive, welcoming club, open to all levels of sailing experience.

“The club has a very strong feeling of camaraderie,” Mr Elkington said.

“It is not just because of the common interest in sailing, but spending time together most weekends has created a trust and friendship between members that go well beyond the water.”

The Redlands Radio Sailing Club welcomes anyone interested in joining, with or without sailing experience.

The club meets every Saturday from 11am to 2pm at Helena St Park, Sovereign Lake, Wellington Point.
