For the remainder of our State Election coverage, we are seeking information from both major parties who will be fighting to gain the keys of Parliament House.

The latest Australian Financial Review-Freshwater Strategy survey reveals the Opposition now leads the government 56-44 on a two-party-preferred basis, putting the LNP well within reach of forming a majority government.

In the 11th week of this coverage, we look at infrastructure and industrial relations and the associated issues facing the residents of the electorates of Capalaba, Redlands, and Oodgeroo.

The Department of State Development and Infrastructure works to shape Queensland’s future by driving economic growth and enabling well-planned, inclusive and resilient local communities. The purpose of the department is to think ahead and act now to secure responsible economic development, safe workplaces and liveable communities.

The department’s purpose is underpinned by the following objectives:

  • Economic prosperity – Sharing in opportunity through diversity and investment in key industries.
  • Liveable communities – Grow Queensland communities where people want to live, work and play.
  • Fair and safe workplaces and communities – Promote fair pay and safe working conditions to provide stability and confidence for a strong economy.
  • A vibrant racing industry – Support the racing industry for the prosperity of Queensland communities.

The department also aims to improve the wellbeing of all Queenslanders by making Queensland safer and supporting fair and productive workplaces through a range of activities including:

  • Managing Queensland’s industrial relations framework; public sector bargaining and Queensland’s participation in the national workplace relations system
  • Delivering work health and safety, and electrical safety services
  • Providing advice, standards and compliance to keep Queenslanders safe at work
  • Delivering workers’ compensation services
  • Providing labour hire licensing regulation and leadership to deliver legislative reforms.

“Major infrastructure projects form a large part of the plan to meet community needs, grow our region and improve liveability. This we are committed to by continuing to implement our Big Build plan and introducing a suite of exciting new projects for the Redlands, including:

  • $1.6 billion and 181 new beds for the Stage 2 upgrade of Redland Hospital.
  • $10 million for Stage 2 upgrades to Alexandra Hills TAFE to boost our workforce with skilled tradespeople.
  • Expanding the Metro busway out to Capalaba
  • $95 million for a multi-storey carpark at Weinam Creek
  • Building a new P-12 High School at Scenic Shores State School
  • $1 million masterplan of Pinklands Sports precinct with RCC, delivering additional hard-court surfaces for Redlands Netball
  • 75% barge subsidy for SMBI
