Spot the seagulls to catch mackerel

Good catches of spotted mackerel have been reported at Harry Atkinson Reef in Moreton Bay using spoons and metal slugs. Some of the fish were quite large. Look for cycling seagulls to find where the mackerel are feeding.

Cathes of nice size whiting have been caught in Rous Channel in the Bay using fresh live blood worms or cured beach worms. Not only are they there in numbers, but the size is good too. The whole of Moreton Bay is fishing well and should do even better in coming months due to recent record rainfalls and the amount of baitfish flushed out of our rivers and creeks.

However, shore fishing around beaches and creeks is not so good due to lots of fresh water still in the system. Take your crab pots with you as there have been lots of mud crabs and sand crabs caught lately.

Oily baits like mullet or mackerel frames work well, but they will be attracted to any bait. Make sure you have your name, address and phone details labelled on your pot. Flathead – a usually abundant table fish – have been hard to catch lately.
