Being only the second Principal in the history of Sheldon College was a challenge that Ms Kate Mortimer was excited to embark on when she commenced her tenure in 2022.

Before taking the reins at Sheldon College, Ms Mortimer carved her path through diverse educational landscapes. From her early days in state education in Sydney to senior leadership roles in highly respected private schools in Adelaide, she honed her skills and tackled challenges that shaped her into the dynamic leader she is today.    

In her first year, Ms Mortimer made a lasting impact by focusing on being present, visible, and demonstrating care. Engaging with staff, communicating with the community, and actively participating in school events, she laid the foundation for a positive and inclusive environment.   

Reflecting on her inaugural year, Ms Mortimer emphasises the strides made in strategic and operational planning, educational practices, and Ms strengthening partnerships with parents and students. Under Ms Mortimer’s leadership, in early 2023, the College unveiled ambitious plans encapsulated in the “2023 and Beyond” strategic framework, outlining the path for the coming years.

A pivotal aspect of this framework is the recent launch of “Luminare”, a bespoke wellbeing program developed by the College. This initiative, rooted in extensive collaboration with the College community, aims to equip students with tools and strategies for personal development and wellbeing. Additionally, the College last unveiled a new Learning Framework, a testament to Ms Mortimer’s commitment to educational innovation. The Learning Framework has been built by the College from the ground up after significant consultation with all levels of teaching staff.   

Ms Mortimer’s forward-thinking approach extends to master planning, where she envisions the integration of Industry 4.0 principles. With an eye on the future job market, the College plans to enhance facilities, fostering an environment conducive to career-ready graduates a key focus. Award-winning initiatives include the 1.2-megawatt solar installation showcasing the College’s commitment to environmental responsibility. 

As Ms Mortimer continues to shape tomorrow’s disruptors, she emphasises the importance of educational innovation. “It’s about how we create graduates who are risk-takers and who are brave enough to ask the right questions so they’re ready for the future,” she asserts.   

The journey ahead holds the promise of continued growth, embracing change while staying true to the philosophy of Love, Laughter and Learning that has defined Sheldon College since its inception in 1997.
