Early detection: Why get a baseline test
SHARE

How would you feel if I told you that the most adults have never undergone a hearing test? Consider this in the context of other health screenings like skin checks, blood tests, or eye examinations. It can be challenging to appreciate the seriousness of hearing care when we see clinics soliciting clients in the street. However, the need for baseline hearing tests and yearly check-ups remains crucial, particularly for adults over 60, and audiologists are the healthcare professionals best trained to help. The key is finding the right one.

As an audiologist and hearing health advocate, I see daily how essential a baseline hearing test is, and yet, it’s often overlooked. It’s not just about detecting hearing loss; it’s about establishing foundational data for lifelong hearing care.

An initial test, ideally once you reach 40, is not just a routine check-up. It’s the cornerstone of your auditory health, much like a benchmark in your medical records. It allows us, as audiologists, to understand your unique hearing profile, which becomes invaluable if your hearing changes over time. And unfortunately, it often will. Without this baseline, it’s impossible to accurately gauge the extent or rate of any hearing decline from natural, pathological, or accidental causes.

However, it’s crucial where this test is conducted. Not all clinics are created equal. In my clinic, A Better Ear, we focus on a medical and patient centred model of care, rather than a sales-driven approach. Our priority is your hearing health, not selling hearing aids. This ethos ensures you receive impartial, scientifically grounded advice. It’s about building a relationship with a clinical team you can trust, one that collaborates with other Redlands healthcare professionals to provide consistency of care.

Neglecting to establish a relationship with a reputable hearing clinic can have significant consequences.

Untreated hearing loss, often unnoticed, is linked to higher risks of dementia and social isolation.

Moreover, inconsistent or inaccurate records can lead to misdiagnosis or delayed treatment. It’s not just about the loss of hearing; it’s about the loss of quality of life.

In conclusion, consider your hearing health as vital as any other aspect of your wellbeing. A baseline hearing test is a small step with profound implications for your future. At A Better Ear, we’re not just here to test your hearing; we’re here to be part of your journey to better health. Remember, your hearing deserves your attention. Schedule your baseline hearing assessment today.

All information is general in nature. Patients should consider their personal circumstances and seek the opinion of an accredited Masters Qualified Audiologist.
