YOUNG Redlanders with dreams of becoming electricians or plumbers are being urged to consider a broader range of trade pathways as competition for apprenticeships continues to grow.

For many students, the goal is set early, often by Year 9.

Electrical and plumbing work have a strong appeal, with young people drawn to the earning potential, lifestyle, social media visibility and chance to eventually run their own business.

But wanting a trade and securing an apprenticeship can be very different things.

Parents say teenagers who have obtained their driver’s licence, prepared a resume and completed a White Card can still find it difficult to get an opportunity even for work experience.

One reason is the large number of small businesses across Redlands Coast.

Many employers may be willing to give a young person a start but lack the time, staffing capacity or financial flexibility needed to supervise an apprentice.

National figures highlight the popularity of the two trades.

Electrician commencements reached a record 6870 in the March quarter of 2026, up 19 per cent, while plumbing commencements rose 5.4 per cent to 2965.

The figures show strong interest, but a skills shortage does not automatically mean an apprenticeship is available for every applicant.

Young people are being encouraged to look beyond the obvious choices and explore related industries that could provide a valuable first step into the workforce.

An aspiring electrician may find opportunities in refrigeration, air-conditioning or renewable energy, while those interested in plumbing may discover work in drainage, gas fitting or other specialist areas.

The first job does not have to determine an entire career, with workplace experience and industry contacts often opening doors to opportunities young people may not have previously considered.

Students can also improve their prospects by obtaining their licence early, considering pre-apprenticeships or school-based pathways, answering their phone and demonstrating reliability.

Employers do not expect a 16-year-old to know everything, but attitude, punctuality and a willingness to learn can make a major difference.

Parents are encouraged to support a Plan B or Plan C as a way of creating more opportunities to get started.

Small businesses need support too.

Queensland’s Free Apprenticeships for Under 25s program helps reduce training costs, but employers still face the cost of wages, supervision and the time required to train a young worker.

An event focused on carpentry, electrical and plumbing pathways is planned for early next year, aiming to connect young people and their parents with industry, businesses and government support services.

The event will provide practical information on available opportunities, who to contact and where to seek help when taking the first step towards a trade career.
