STATE Member for Redlands Rebecca Young has announced that the next stage of Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd upgrades will include new traffic lights at Double Jump Rd and four lanes between Anita St and the intersection, but a local councillor says the project falls well short of what residents were promised.

The State Government will duplicate a 450-metre section of the busy corridor, install signals at Double Jump Rd, build noise barriers and improve active-transport pathways.

Mrs Young said the project had been shaped by residents’ concerns about safety, congestion and disruption during previous works between Anita St and Magnolia Pde.

“Residents have been very clear with me – they want this road upgraded, but they don’t want a repeat of the congestion, access issues and disruption they experienced under the former government,” she said.

She said the works would improve a key intersection while allowing the broader Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd corridor to be upgraded progressively.

“My community has been very clear – they want the Double Jump Rd intersection upgraded and they want Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd to better meet the needs of our growing community,” Mrs Young said.

But Division 3 Cr Paul Gollé said residents should not be asked to celebrate what he described as a comparatively minor component of the long-promised wider road upgrade.

“Residents have been promised by consecutive State Governments, of both political persuasions, that Cleveland-Redland Bay Rd through to Cleveland would be upgraded,” Cr Gollé said.

“Yet we are now being asked to celebrate approximately 450 metres of road works, when at least 200 metres of that section is already dual lane.

“In reality, we are talking about an upgrade of only around 200 to 250 metres of road.

“Meanwhile, the busiest and most critical section of Cleveland-Redland Bay Road leading into Cleveland remains largely untouched and continues to function like a goat track.”

Mrs Young said design work had progressed, and she wanted construction to begin as soon as possible, but said the project still required Commonwealth environmental approval under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act.

Enabling works are expected to begin in late 2027, subject to approvals.
