Financial Lessons Inspired by a Basketball Grand Final
SHARE

I went to a basketball grand final recently. It was close, exciting and competitive right to the end.

Watching the game unfold, I was reminded how many of the same principles apply to managing money well.

Financial success rarely comes as the result of one brilliant decision. More often, it comes from working together, understanding the fundamentals, knowing what you are trying to achieve and making sure every part of the plan has a purpose.

In a grand final the objective is obvious. Yet with our finances, that is not always the case.

We can become so focused on earning income, paying bills, managing the mortgage and keeping up with everyday expenses that we never clearly define what we’re after.

Your bigger financial picture might include owning your home sooner, travelling more, helping your children, building investments or creating greater freedom and choice. This clarity makes financial decisions easier.

That also matters when sharing finances with a partner. A successful basketball team cannot have five players running five different plays.

Similarly with couples it helps when both understand what they are trying to build together.

A good basketball team understands roles. Some players score. Others rebound, defend or create opportunities for teammates. Money works better when it has defined roles too.

With personal finances, every dollar is a player on your team.

Some dollars cover everyday living costs. Others may build emergency savings, investments for the future, or provide room to enjoy life today.
