Financial success doesn’t just start with the money

Many people believe financial success begins with earning more.

A higher income, paying off debt, growing investments, or buying a home are common financial goals. These are worthwhile aspirations.

Yet after more than 30 years working in financial services and financial coaching, I have noticed something that surprises many people.

The most inspiring financial stories I have encountered all have something in common. They did not begin with the money. Instead, they began with a clear picture of the life someone wanted to create.

START WITH YOUR LIFE

When people first sit down with me, they usually expect the conversation to focus on numbers. They are ready to discuss income, expenses, debt, superannuation, or investments. While these conversations are valuable, I prefer to begin somewhere different.

I ask about their most important goals. These are the goals that shape the direction of a person’s life. Everything else tends to become easier to prioritise once these are clear.

I want to understand what they hope life will look like in five, 10, or 20 years. They might describe spending more time with family, starting a business, travelling, helping their children into adulthood, or reaching retirement with confidence and choice.

I’ve worked with people who earned very good incomes, yet still felt something was missing, and others who found a deep sense of satisfaction once their money became aligned with the life they genuinely wanted to build.

Once those goals become clear, money becomes a tool that supports the future they are working towards rather than an end in itself.

WHEN PURPOSE GUIDES FINANCES

When you know where you’re trying to go in life, it becomes much easier to decide what your money should be doing today.

People become more confident deciding where their money should go because each decision can be measured against what they are trying to achieve.

Spending becomes more intentional, saving gains a purpose, and investing becomes part of a long-term plan instead of a search for quick results.

Over time, these decisions begin to reinforce each other. Better financial habits create stronger financial outcomes, and stronger financial outcomes provide greater freedom to invest time, energy, and resources into the things that bring meaning and fulfilment.

COMPLETING THE CIRCLE

Many people assume money sits at the centre of a successful life. However, I have come to believe the opposite is true.

A meaningful life provides the direction that gives money its purpose. Financial success is far more rewarding when it supports the people, experiences, and opportunities that are genuinely important to you.
