From the Editor’s Desk: Redlands deserves clarity as mayoral absence drags on

THERE comes a point when a prolonged absence from elected office stops being solely a private matter and becomes a legitimate issue of public accountability.

Redland City has reached that point.

Mayor Jos Mitchell has extended her leave until October 31 with Cr Julie Talty continuing as Acting Mayor.

What began as 12 weeks of leave has now stretched to 31 weeks with no certainty the mayor will return when the latest extension expires.

When Mayor Mitchell last addressed the community about three months ago, she acknowledged her absence was creating uncertainty and said she would provide more information later.

Redlands is still waiting.

Before she was elected, Mayor Mitchell told voters: “I champion high ethical standards, integrity, transparency, genuine community engagement and inclusivity and I have backed this up by speaking out previously and helping others to do the same. My commitment to make a change is based on wanting the best possible representation for our Redlands community.”

Those were admirable principles and they are particularly relevant now.

The community is not demanding private medical details.

It is asking Mayor Mitchell to honour her commitment to transparency by providing an honest indication of whether she expects to return to the role and, if so, when.

The mayor’s previous experience at Byron Shire Council adds context to the continuing silence.

In a past interview, Jos Mitchell alleged she had endured an increased workload, long hours and treatment she did not expect while employed there, before ultimately leaving on medical grounds.

The report said she had an accepted workers’ compensation claim and described the serious personal and financial consequences she attributed to that experience.

That history inevitably raises questions about whether Mayor Mitchell’s present absence involves a workplace dispute or compensation process.

Is she alleging unreasonable conduct or psychological injury arising from her current role?

Is she pursuing a WorkCover claim involving the council?

No conclusion should be drawn without evidence.

But after repeated leave extensions, ratepayers deserve to know whether this is a temporary health-related absence or a potentially protracted matter that could leave Redlands under acting leadership for many more months.

Community frustration is palpable.

Some readers have described the extensions as farcical.

Others question why ratepayers should continue funding a mayoral salary reportedly worth about $4500 a week, including superannuation, while the mayor remains absent.

Many believe that, if Mayor Mitchell cannot return within a reasonable period, she should step aside and allow residents to elect permanent leadership.

There is a growing public perception that she has vacated the role despite not legally relinquishing office.

That perception has been fuelled by months of silence, repeated extensions and the absence of a clear pathway back to work.

Cr Talty deserves recognition for providing stability, but an acting arrangement should not become an indefinite substitute for the leadership residents elected.

If Mayor Mitchell remains on full pay, ratepayers deserve confirmation and an explanation of the rules governing that arrangement.

If legislation places no meaningful limit on how long a mayor can remain absent while retaining office, the State Government should explain why.

Local Government Minister Ann Leahy must seek an urgent briefing and explain what threshold, if any, would allow intervention or the mayoral position to be declared vacant.

The people of Redlands did not elect an indefinite acting arrangement.

They elected a full-time mayor.

After 31 weeks of leave and counting, they deserve an honest answer about whether their mayor is coming back—and what happens if she is not.
