REDLANDS cannot afford to sit back if it wants to secure its share of the billions of dollars being invested ahead of the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, with Queensland Treasurer David Janetzki urging the region to keep fighting for projects that will deliver benefits long after the closing ceremony.

Speaking at Champion Redlands Coast’s State Budget Breakfast, Mr Janetzki said the Games presented a once-in-a-generation opportunity but warned every region across Queensland was competing for a slice of the state’s record infrastructure program.

“I do think we’re talking a lot about the four weeks of sport in 2032,” he said.

“But we’ve got all this generational legacy that sits around it as well.

“It’s four weeks of sport, that’s super important, but how can you best set up the Redlands for life after that as well?”

Mr Janetzki said having a clear list of priorities made it easier for local MPs to argue the region’s case within government.

“Whether it’s the Whitewater Centre, the hospital expansion or the road projects, the unanimity of voice actually makes the lives of local MPs easier,” he said.

“It actually makes it easier for us if we can be unified in our priorities.

“It’s always a question of priorities, but if you can be as clear as possible, that is most helpful for governments and local MPs on the ground.”

The Treasurer praised Champion Redlands Coast for bringing business, government and community leaders together to advocate for the region.

“Champion Redlands Coast is doing a good job of that,” he said.
