THE Queensland Government has unveiled a concept design for the $41 million Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade on North Stradbroke Island, with residents and visitors now being encouraged to help shape the project through community consultation.
The proposed upgrade aims to improve functionality, accessibility and the overall customer experience at the busy transport hub while reflecting the island’s character and cultural identity.
Key features of the concept design include a new dual-berth passenger pontoon, pedestrian shelters, upgraded parking and bus facilities, and landscaped community open spaces.
Planning for the project has been funded through the South East Queensland City Deal and informed by the Gumpi Master Plan, alongside input from key stakeholders.
Acting Deputy Director- General Network Services and Operations Dean Helm said the terminal remained a vital gateway for the island and region.
“This key milestone presents an opportunity to understand local needs and reflect on potential priorities for the ferry terminal upgrade,” Mr Helm said.
“Consultation with the community and a range of stakeholders will help to ensure the project aligns with the island’s natural environment and cultural heritage.
“We’re making sure that any upgrades to the terminal have a focus on enhancing island connectivity, tourism, and the experience of our customers.
“Following community consultation, the project will undertake further planning to inform the project design and delivery phases.
“I encourage residents to have their say on this essential infrastructure upgrade and help shape how it will benefit and reflect North Stradbroke Island’s unique assets and its community.”
Redland City Council also encouraged locals to attend information sessions and complete the online survey, saying the community had a role to play in shaping the future of the terminal.
Community consultation on the concept design is open until June 21.
The Dunwich Ferry Terminal Upgrade is jointly funded by the Australian Government, Queensland Government and Redland City Council through the SEQ City Deal.
