AUSTRALIA’S first Healthy Men Community Conversation has taken place in Bonner, with local organisations and residents gathering at the Wynnum Manly Men’s Shed to discuss how the community can better support the wellbeing of men and boys.

The forum, hosted by Federal Member for Bonner Kara Cook, is part of a new national initiative led by Assistant Minister for Social Services Ged Kearney and Special Envoy for Men’s Health Dan Repacholi.

Bonner was selected to launch the series, giving local voices a central role in shaping the national conversation.

Community groups, sporting clubs, service providers and residents filled the shed for an open discussion on issues affecting men and boys, including mental health, loneliness, healthy relationships, masculinity and help seeking.

Representatives from frontline organisations such as The IF Project, Beyond DV, yourtown and Micah Projects shared insights from their work with families across the region.

Much of the conversation focused on the importance of grassroots organisations, particularly Men’s Sheds, sporting clubs and schools in creating safe, welcoming spaces where men and boys can build connection and resilience.

Attendees spoke about the need for early intervention, stronger community networks and reducing stigma around asking for help.

Ms Cook said the strong turnout reflected the community’s appetite for honest conversations about men’s wellbeing.

“Healthy communities start with healthy people, and that includes making sure men and boys feel supported, connected and empowered to ask for help when they need it,” she said.

She thanked Mr Kearney and Mr Repacholi for bringing the national initiative to Bonner and praised local organisations for contributing their on the ground experience.

“We know the best solutions come from listening to people doing the work every day,” she said.

The outcomes from the Bonner forum will help inform future Healthy Men Community Conversations across Australia, with the Government aiming to build a clearer picture of the challenges facing men and boys.
