RENOWNED choir director Jonathon Welch says it takes about three years to “cook a choir” – and while his Redlands group is already sizzling, a newly formed Logan ensemble is now firing up for its debut performance.
For the first time, Mr Welch’s latest Rock Choir project will take to the stage at the Logan Entertainment Centre on June 27 joined by its Redlands counterpart for a night celebrating iconic rock music.
Mr Welch said he began rehearsing with about 35 Logan singers in early April, with the group set to join around 80 members from the Redlands choir for the performance.
The Redlands choir recently attracted strong support with a cohort of about 120 singers performing two sold-out Rock Choir concerts at the Redland Performing Arts Centre on May 9.
“It has been wonderful to work with these people and let them loose,” he said.
“They’ve worked so hard and have shown what they are capable of in a short period of time.
“Their joy and enthusiasm reflect the area.
“This is also a way to showcase this local talent.”
The Rock Choir project is Mr Welch’s fourth since 2023, with the original Redlands choir attracting about 140 singers.
“The success of these projects is proof that this works,” he said.
“Most original members have returned.
“It’s exciting and I would expect the Logan choir to also grow as people spread the word.
“It’s like a frog in a pond.
“The ripple effect of a choir in a community is enormous.
“We are building a musical village, a musical family.”
Mr Welch said one of the most rewarding aspects of the choir movement was seeing members gain confidence and a renewed sense of purpose.
“This is a time to come together and share a common passion and love,” he said.
“This is so much more than a choir.
“For some people, it is a reason to get out of bed.
“And we all need something to look forward to.”
The concerts feature a large repertoire of rock classics with singers tackling syncopated rhythms and songs performed in canon.
“It can be a challenge,” he said. “It can take people out of their comfort zone.
“And this flows into other areas of people’s lives.
“Some people, especially older people forget how to play and this concert offers plenty of this.”
Audiences can expect classics from INXS, Queen, Coldplay and R.E.M.
Guest artist for the June 27 performance is Ellen Reed.
