AN inaugural community boxing event at Victoria Point is shaping as one of the biggest grassroots fights showcases seen in the region, with more than 250 nominations flooding in from clubs across Queensland and interstate.

Organisers say that what began as a simple idea to host their own local event has quickly exceeded expectations, forcing them to cap the competition at 60 bouts due to venue capacity and the decision to run a single ring format.

The event will feature athletes from a wide range of clubs and divisions, with organisers promising a professional and action-packed atmosphere from the opening bell.

Adding to the excitement, Australian boxing star Liam Paro has been confirmed as a special guest for the day.

Event organisers said Paro’s support for grassroots boxing and young Queensland athletes would be a major highlight for competitors and fans alike.

The event is expected to attract a strong local crowd and further showcase the growing popularity of amateur boxing across the Redlands and wider South East Queensland region.

The event also comes amid a proud milestone for the academy, with Neon’s own William “BOXR WILL” Turnbull recently selected to represent Queensland at the upcoming Australian School Age Championships.

The championships will be held from July 8-11 at the Sleeman Sports Complex, Chandler, with 12-year-old Will becoming the youngest member of Neon’s amateur competition team to earn selection in the Queensland squad.

The Neon Boxing Classic, hosted by Neon Boxing Academy, will take over The Link YMCA Youth Centre, 128 Links Rd, on Saturday, bringing together emerging fighters, coaches, supporters and boxing fans for a full day of amateur bouts.
