HEADSPACE Capalaba is marking a major community milestone this month, celebrating 10 years of supporting young people across the Redlands and Bayside region with free, youth friendly mental health and wellbeing services.

Since opening its doors in 2016, the centre, operated by Wesley Mission Queensland, has delivered almost 45,000 occasions of service to more than 9000 young people, reflecting both the growing pressures facing local youth and the trust families place in the service.

Wesley Mission Queensland CEO Jude Emmer said the anniversary was a reminder of how vital the centre had become for the community.

“Ten years on, headspace Capalaba has become a safe, trusted and welcoming place for young people who might otherwise fall through the cracks,” she said.

“The growth we’ve seen in service demand is a clear signal that young people are facing increasing pressures, but it also shows they know where to turn for help.”

The centre has also seen a significant rise in engagement from diverse communities.

First Nations participation has more than doubled, from 6 per cent in 2016 to 13 per cent today, while young people from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds have increased from 5 per cent to 13 per cent.

LGBTIQA+ young people now make up more than a quarter of all clients.

For staff, the impact is often felt in the quieter moments.

Wesley Mission Queensland General Manager Mental Health Bianca Scheepers said the team sees change unfold gradually but meaningfully.

“It might be a young person feeling safe enough to come back for a second appointment, reconnecting with school or family, building confidence, or taking the next step toward study, work or independence,” she said.

Headspace National CEO Jason Trethowan said the milestone is a testament to the dedication of the local team and community partners.

“I’m excited to see what the next 10 years hold for headspace Capalaba and the young people it supports.”
