THE State Government will take control of the full Weinam Creek precinct in a major move aimed at breaking long-running delays and fast-tracking delivery of critical infrastructure for Redlands and island commuters.
Under the plan, the State Government will assume responsibility for the entire Priority Development Area (PDA), bringing planning, land acquisition and delivery under a single coordinated approach.
Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said the decision would streamline progress and unlock long-awaited upgrades.
“This is about bringing the whole precinct together so it can be delivered properly,” Mrs Young said.
“I have engaged extensively with the Redland community, from nearby residents, businesses and Redlands’ island commuters, who want to see an end to the delays holding up construction and delivery of the entire Weinam Creek Priority Development Area, not just a car park.”
The State will now lead delivery of the precinct, including pushing ahead with construction of a multi-level car park while broader planning for the site continues.
The move includes acquiring the full site footprint, a step the Government says will remove fragmentation and allow the precinct to be delivered as a single integrated project.
Mrs Young said the approach would provide certainty and ensure long-term outcomes for the community.
“This is about bringing the whole precinct together so it can be delivered properly,” she said.
The State’s takeover is designed to eliminate ongoing delays that have stalled progress, while also laying the groundwork for future development including transport integration, residential opportunities and supporting services.
Mrs Young said the priority was to deliver immediate infrastructure while ensuring the precinct was properly planned for years to come.
“We’re removing delays and getting on with building the car park, which is the foundation, not the final step,” she said.
“Work is currently underway to take a full audit of current parking, identify temporary overflow options and work with operators on practical arrangements during construction which will begin in the coming months.”
