CLEVELAND line passengers are being urged to plan ahead this month, with significant rail disruptions and service changes set to impact journeys during a 23-day period of major works across South East Queensland.
From April 3 to April 26, track closures and altered timetables will affect multiple lines across the network — with Cleveland line services among those experiencing reduced express options, altered connections and periods of bus integration.
During peak weekday closures from April 7 to 10, Cleveland line commuters will lose express services entirely, with trains running to a modified timetable and operating in conjunction with the Ferny Grove line.
Further changes later in the month will see the Cleveland line linked with other parts of the network, including the Airport line during Airtrain operating hours between April 13 and 24, potentially affecting travel times and service frequency.
Rail authorities have confirmed that while the Cleveland line will remain operational throughout the works, passengers should expect delays, longer travel times and the need to transfer between services depending on their journey.
Rail replacement buses will operate on affected sections of the broader network, particularly between key inner-city stations such as Boggo Road and Banoon, which may impact connecting services for Cleveland line commuters travelling to and from Brisbane.
Acting Head of Translink Dean Helm said the closures were necessary to deliver major upgrades across the network.
“These track closures allow important work to be undertaken on a number of projects that are critical to expanding and improving our rail network,” Mr Helm said.
“If you are travelling during this period, I encourage you to plan ahead, consider your transport options, and allow plenty of travel time.
“We understand extended track closures can be an inconvenience to customers and this is why we have coordinated work across multiple projects to be undertaken at the same time to help minimise the period of the disruption.
“While there is never a good time for track closures, conducting this work over the school holiday period reduces the impact, as less customers travel on the network at this time.
“We will ensure plenty of rail replacement bus services are available providing connections to help customers complete their journeys and get where they need to go.
“Thank you to everyone for their patience at this time as we work to build a better rail network.”
The works form part of a broader pipeline of major rail upgrades, including Cross River Rail supporting works, the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, and the rollout of the European Train Control System.
Cross River Rail Delivery Authority CEO Graeme Newton said the coordinated works would allow multiple upgrades to be delivered efficiently.
“These works are being carried out as part of the Delivery Authority’s wider scope beyond the new underground tunnels and stations and are just one part of the broader transformation to build a better rail network, alongside projects like The Wave on the Sunshine Coast and Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail,” Mr Newton said.
Passengers are advised to check journey planners and allow extra time, particularly during peak periods and major events, with additional pressure expected on the network during NRL and AFL fixtures across April.
For Cleveland line commuters, the message is clear — expect changes, plan ahead, and allow extra time.
