BIRKDALE South State School crossing guard Michael Aliotta is celebrating 16 years of dedicated service this week, marking more than a decade of helping local children safely make their way to and from school each day.

Now in his late 70s, Mr Aliotta has become a familiar and friendly face to generations of families in the Birkdale community.

Born in Sicily and arriving in Sydney as a young boy, he has called Birkdale home for around two decades.

For nearly all that time, he has faithfully stood at the school crossing, rain or shine, ensuring students start and finish their school day safely.

Mr Aliotta spoke warmly about the joy the role brings him, particularly seeing the smiling faces of students and the fond memories they bring of dropping his own grandchildren to school some years ago.

Despite earning a modest wage for the work, Mr Aliotta said he would happily do the job for nothing because of what it means to him and the community.

The Member for Capalaba, Russell Field MP, recently caught up with Mr Aliotta following a school function, where the pair shared a lengthy conversation about his years of supporting local families and students.

Mr Field said people like Mr Aliotta represent the very best of the Redlands.

“Michael’s commitment to keeping our kids safe and his genuine love for the community is something we should all be grateful for,” Mr Field said.

“For 16 years, families at Birkdale South have started and finished their school day knowing Michael is there looking out for our local kids.

“That kind of dedication leaves a lasting impact.

“On behalf of our community, I want to thank Michael for his years of service and for the care he shows local families every single day.”
