MORE than 80 per cent of renters in Wynnum, Wynnum North and Wynnum West are suffering from rental stress, according to data released by the State Opposition.

Member for Lytton Joan Pease said the rental crisis had reached a dire peak throughout Queensland, with three-in-four renters suffering from rental stress.

She said shocking new data revealed that every single renter in hundreds of Queensland suburbs was experiencing rental stress.

According to the data, the situation is worse for renters in Carindale, Hemmant and Chandler, with every household experiencing rental stress in those suburbs, and more than 90 per cent suffering rental stress in Cannon Hill.

More than 70 per cent of renters in Lota, Manly,

Manly West and Gumdale are suffering rental stress.

The report by Digital Finance Analytics revealed that for the month of October, renters all over Queensland were struggling.

It comes as the latest inflation data from the ABS shows Brisbane has the highest inflation rate in the country.

Ms Pease said the statistics highlighted that the cost-of-living crisis was only getting worse, and said the Government had to use the mid-year budget update to provide some financial support to Queenslanders.

“In Brisbane, more than 80 per cent of renters are in rental stress, with 67 suburbs where every single renter is under stress, and more than 90 suburbs with more than 80 per cent of renters unable to cover their bills and rent,” she said.

Shadow Housing Minister Meaghan Scanlon said Premier David Crisafulli promised to fix the housing and cost-of-living crises.

“Meanwhile, Queenslanders are struggling with ballooning rents, and hardworking families can’t afford to pay their bills,” she said. “We are scared Queenslanders will forever be drowning in debt after the Crisafulli LNP Government axed 10,000 social and affordable homes.”

Housing Minister Sam O’Connor did not respond to questions from the Redland Bayside News.
