IN a captivating encounter at Highfields Sports and Recreation Park, Wynnum Wolves earned a hard-fought 2-2 draw against South West Queensland Thunder, despite fielding a predominantly U23 squad.

The semi-professional Thunder side had the upper hand for much of the game, but the Wolves showcased remarkable resilience and determination to secure a point in a thrilling match.

The game began with the Thunder putting immediate pressure on the Wolves.

They took the lead in the 14th minute through a goal from Luke Beutel.

The Thunder doubled their advantage when Jack Debortoli found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into raptures.

However, the young Wolves squad didn’t let their heads drop.

Their response came in the 32nd minute, when Nicholas Brehaut pulled one back for the visitors.

The goal gave Wolves new life, and despite a few more Thunder chances, the score remained 2-1 at half-time.

The second half saw a more determined Wolves side growing into the game and becoming increasingly competitive.

The Thunder, however, continued to control possession and looked likely to extend their lead, but the Wolves’ defence held strong.

As the match wore on, the visitors grew in confidence.

In the 84th minute, Wolves’ persistence paid off.

Luke Stachowicz slotted home to level the score at 2-2.

With the momentum behind them, Wolves pushed for a late winner.

As the match entered its final stages, Wolves thought they had completed a remarkable comeback when they appeared to have scored a late winner in the final minute.

However, the goal was controversially disallowed for obstruction, leaving the visitors disappointed but proud of their performance.

The match ended in a 2-2 draw, with both teams sharing the spoils.

South West Queensland Thunder will be disappointed not to have secured all three points, especially after their early dominance.

On the other hand, the young Wolves can take great pride in their resilience and ability to challenge a semi-professional team.
