THORNLANDS fisherman Leon Joliffe has been casting his line into the waters of camaraderie and adventure for the past 10 years as a member of the Redlands RSL Fishing Club.

Currently serving as the club’s treasurer, and a former president for four years, Mr Joliffe, 61, says the club offers far more than just fishing – it’s a place for social connection, competitions, and family involvement.

“It’s not just the fishing,” he said.

“There are competitions and social activities. It’s good for all ages.”

In his decade of membership, Mr Joliffe has enjoyed many memorable trips, including a recent four-day stay at The Huts at Koureyabba, located on the western side of North Stradbroke Island.

During this trip, Mr Joliffe, along with Bill Jenkins, the club’s oldest member at 94, caught a variety of fish and crabs – although most had to be returned to the water due to size restrictions.

“We look out for each other, and we encourage families. It only costs $10 more for a family membership,” Mr Joliffe said.

His fishing adventures often take him off the coast of Moreton Island, where he enjoys catching spotted mackerel, a species known for its speed and spirited fight.

He also spends time fishing for snapper, mullet, and flathead, making the most of his five-metre runabout and soft plastics to catch his fill along the Bay.

The club also organises regular trips, including a tailor competition at Fingal and a freshwater outing at Somerset Dam.

The Redlands RSL Fishing Club thrives on the joy of regular weigh-ins and monthly competitions.

“We get together at the RSL with a carton of beer, have a chin wag, and weigh the fish,” Mr Joliffe said.
