TO combat rising crime and enhance safety in Thornlands, Division 3 Councillor Paul Golle is calling on residents with homes facing Sandalwood Park to advise if they have security cameras installed that could assist police.

The appeal follows recent reports from residents to Queensland Police detailing troubling incidents, including a drug dealer supplying substances to minors, and the confiscation of a knife carried by a youth.

Cr Golle said private CCTV footage could play a pivotal role in supporting police investigations, helping track suspicious activity and gather critical evidence.

“Police often rely on residential camera footage to build cases, making it a valuable tool in addressing criminal activity,” Cr Golle said.

“I want to hear from residents with cameras who are willing to assist in ongoing investigations.

“Any additional information can significantly help the police keep our community safe.”

In addition to seeking community support, Cr Golle has requested the installation of a mobile CCTV unit in the park, and advocated for regular mobile security patrols.

However, he noted that these initiatives depended on council resource availability and operational priorities.

While private CCTV could be part of the solution, Cr Golle acknowledged residents’ concerns about youths frequently gathering at the park’s shelter.

Installed in response to community demand, the shelter will remain in place as it continues to serve local families.

“Removing park infrastructure as a deterrent is not the answer,” Cr Golle said.

“The real solution lies in increased police recruitment and resourcing – something the State Government needs to prioritise to effectively address community safety.

“Police should feel supported and empowered to carry out their duties without unnecessary legal constraints that undermine their ability to protect the public.”

Residents willing to assist with CCTV footage or provide information can contact Cr Golle on 0438 117 265.

Suspicious activity should continue to be reported directly to police via PoliceLink.
