THORNESIDE’S favourite sports ground has been getting a serious makeover, with the next upgrade set to wrap up this year.

Redland City Council is doing away with the existing lighting infrastructure on field one of the William Taylor Memorial Sports precinct, replacing it with a competition-standard LED system to better light up the field at night.

The grounds are home turf for Mooroondu Football Club, who have welcomed the upgrade.

“The lighting upgrade is quite significant for the club, because (the lights) were possibly about to fail,” Mooroondu Football Club president Michael Maguire said.

With fears of players bumping into each other at night abated, Mooroondu FC is looking to potentially host interclub games under the new lighting.

“This can be from other clubs coming to play with us, so we get a right to host finals, or you know, semi-finals at the end of the season,” Mr Maguire said.

More than just an upgrade for the club, he said the higher lux lighting would bring further opportunities for the greater Mooroondu sports and recreation community.

“Redland City Council are also doing field work at the moment on the actual turf itself, they’ve put in (herbicide) and are doing the top dress of field one,” Mr Maguire said.

With football season finished for Mooroondu FC, they are looking to hit the ground running in 2025 as the council continues its “master plan” upgrade of the facility, working on “car parking, drainage and additional lighting for our other two fields”, Mr Maguire said.

Mayor Jos Mitchell said the upgrades would help keep the club’s electricity costs down while also ensuring the lighting quality at the ground met acceptable competition standards.

“The ongoing improvement works will ensure it remains a valued asset for many years to come,” Cr Mitchell said.
