An intergenerational initiative designed to boost digital skills among seniors while giving young people paid, hands-on experience will launch this month in Capalaba.

The Tech IT Easy program comes at an opportune time for older residents who may have received smart technology for Christmas — including smartphones, tablets or smart watches — and need help setting them up or learning how to use them.

Funded by Redland City Council, the initiative pairs local young people aged 18 to 24 with residents aged 55 and over, offering free one-on-one technology support aimed at improving IT literacy and confidence.

The program is delivered through a partnership between Council, social enterprise group Youngster.co and Capalaba Central Shopping Centre.

Redland City Mayor Jos Mitchell said Tech IT Easy was free for senior participants and focused on everyday digital needs, from using smartphones to navigating social media.

“Under the program, older people learn new skills, while young people gain paid experience and confidence by providing one-on-one tech support,” the Mayor said.

Mayor Mitchell said the initiative aligned with several of Council’s strategic priorities, including the Redlands Coast Stronger Communities Strategy 2024–2027, Redlands Coast Young People’s Action Plan 2024–2027 and the Redlands Coast Age-friendly Action Plan 2021–2026.

“Council is creating stronger, more connected communities and fostering intergenerational respect and understanding by supporting digital inclusion,” she said.

“Tech IT Easy is one of the avenues that helps achieve this and Council is proud to be a partner in the program.

“The initiative also encourages the older participant to exchange a pearl of wisdom to the younger participant during the process.”

The Youngster.co program also aims to address loneliness and social isolation across both age groups, providing opportunities for meaningful connection and shared learning.

Tech IT Easy will launch with a promotional day on Monday, January 12, 2026, with regular sessions running from January 19 to April 20. Sessions will be held on Mondays from 10am to noon at Capalaba Central Shopping Centre, in The Circle area next to NAB.

Bookings are encouraged, though drop-in visits will be accepted subject to availability. Further details are available on the Youngster.co website.
