SOUTHERN Moreton Bay Island (SMBI) residents will benefit from cheaper vehicle ferry fares as the State Government rolls out a major cost-of-living initiative.
The Government’s new vehicle ferry subsidy will deliver a 50 per cent discount on SeaLink vehicle ferry services operating between Redland Bay and the islands of Lamb, Karragarra, Macleay and Russell.
The fare cut took effect from Monday.
SeaLink’s existing 20 per cent discount for SMBI residents will remain in place, with the Government’s subsidy reducing costs by a further 50 per cent for the next two years, or until the Weinam Creek car park at Redland Bay is completed.
The subsidy will halve the cost of a car (under 5.4 metres) from the current $72 – which already includes the SeaLink discount – to just $36 per trip, saving eligible residents $36 per journey.
The initiative is part of the Government’s SMBI Parking Relief Package, which also includes permanent 50 cent passenger fares for Coochiemudlo Island residents, introduced in January this year.
Member for Redlands Rebecca Young said the barge subsidy was a major win for the island communities.
“I’m very pleased to confirm that from Monday our 50 per cent subsidy will kick in, marking a huge step forward in addressing long-standing local transport and access concerns and delivering on my election commitment,” Ms Young said.
“Introducing this discount will mean a resident who completes 50 trips per year in a car less than 5.4m would save $1800.
“I know just how important the SMBI vehicle ferry is in connecting island residents with the mainland, ensuring they have easy access to essential services such as health services, employment opportunities and study.
“For too long, the former Labor Government ignored this community and failed to provide the necessary assistance to the unique challenges islander residents were grappling with. This subsidy is a clear sign that the Crisafulli Government is listening and delivering the support that they deserve.”
SeaLink General Manager – South East Queensland Ben Renwick said the company supported the move and looked forward to working with the State Government on the initiative.
“As the passenger and vehicle ferry operator for the Southern Moreton Bay Islands, we welcome the introduction of this subsidy and to work with the State Government on the delivery of this initiative,” Mr Renwick said.
“The SMBI Parking Relief Package recognises the specific needs of the island community. We’re committed to supporting solutions that improve access and reliability for the communities we serve.”
SeaLink will keep an additional vessel on standby to ensure sufficient capacity if the new discount leads to an increase in trips.
